Movie Unknown 2011 - What happened with the retired secret cop? Why did he commit suicide?

Also, what is the deal with the two old guys (Jurgen and Dr. Cole)?
If the cop wouldn't have commited suicide, would have Dr. Cole killed
him? but mainly, why did he commited suicide in the first place?
